A week in review. This week I began working on a project that I had been wanting to get started on for so long. I had been wanting to create horror movie inspired friends for months but I kept holding myself back because I had been dead set on the notion that in some way if I did it I would be betraying my folk art loving friends. It is a delicate balance and I really want to be the  bridge that closes the gap in traditional folk art and the type of work you would look for in a shop that serves the younger crowd. Not all of my Halloween folk art loving friends, but a good majority of them love folk art but also collect and display horror themed items, and I know for me personally trying to mingle the two design esthetics is always a challenge.

This week I also decided to experiment with another idea that has been floating around my creative mind: making Halloween candy buckets with witch and devil faces. I absolutely love early Halloween lanterns if I could afford it I would decorate entire rooms with them! I wanted to bring back the old, by making it new and adding a bit of a modern twist to them so that I can make them appealing to the collectors of the new, as well as collectors of the old.

It is my hope that in with time, and with a lot of practice I will be able to successfully bridge this gap so that those of us who have our hearts set on dipping our toes in each of these very distinctive worlds will be able to do so in a way that beautifully accentuates our unique styles and brings us joy for years to come!

Making 2 Part Silicone Molds

It’s time to make molds! I have been working on this set of Johanna Parker Designs inspired trick or treat buckets for a few weeks now. I have decided the best way to keep their original charm would be to make up a mold for casting.  This is such a messy process! I made the mistake of wearing my favorite pants while I applied the many layers of silicone to the exterior of these spooky cuties needless to say I ended up wearing a bit of silicone as well! It takes between 4-5 layers of this sticky goop to build up enough layers to make a solid mold, with roughly 2 hours in between coats it is assured I will be at it all day(totally worth the effort though!)
